4 Problems getAbstract Book Summaries Solved for Me

Save Time, Money and Gain Direction so You Can Apply What You Read

Professional non-fiction book summaries by getAbstract are one of the best tools I’ve come across. Each summary includes written and audio version with a recommendation score, quotes, and take-away points. I rediscovered getAbstract in late 2017 and originally, I believe I signed up as a student.

Before using getAbstract, four main problems kept me from reading and applying the knowledge acquired from books. Note, I was in my twenties at the time (perhaps you can relate).

  1. No time to read whole books
  2. Not a fast reader
  3. Not sure where to start
  4. Purchasing books without a plan

No time to read whole books

While I couldn’t justify spending hours reading a book when I could do 10+ things arguably more exciting (e.g., watching videos and going out), I had time to read a couple pages. Since a summary was only sections long, I could read it during my lunch or end of day. The result was 10 minutes of extremely well invested time.

Not a fast reader

I would skim books if I got bored and re-read paragraphs if I didn’t understand. I skipped dense books. I noticed getAbstract summaries were easy to read and broke down main ideas into sections. Reading complex ideas in simpler terms made me smile. My reading level improved by increasing my every day reading, but I gain quicker understanding through the book summaries because they were easy and insightful.

Not sure where to start

I kept a book list from recommendations and articles, but sometimes it went unused. I would read whatever would help me with the next obstacle I came across. Thankfully, I set up my desired “channels” (think genres) in my getAbstract subscription, and then via weekly emails, I received summaries vetted to cover topics of my interest or industry, and popular or highly recommended. It took the guess work out, saving me time web surfing and random book purchases.

Purchasing books without a plan

Before, I would buy a random/lightly researched book that I thought would help me in a certain area. On my summaries account, I started searching authors and popular books to see if they were worth the hype. Sometimes, I’d pass on one book but find a related book more interesting. I began using getAbstract summaries to determine which books ended on my bookcases.

Who would benefit most from a subscription?

In 2017, I enjoyed my subscription access as a corporate benefit for a little bit. Today, I have a getAbstract subscription, and together with my library cards and book apps, I enjoy reading more and waste less money. Check out this week’s free summary here on my site.

The good news is a personal yearly subscription is less than 83 cents (US) a day (at the time of this post being published).

If you’re a young professional looking to catching up on classic leadership and business books, this subscription is a must. You can also find book summaries related to popular industries. If you’re a company looking to provide learning benefits, this is a nice addition.
